It was originally used to find the best place to bury a loved one or to hunt ground for government buildings and memorials. Today it is used most often in homes or offices of people that want to creative a positive vibe in environments they are in daily. While there is a complex system of elements behind the basis of Feng Shui, it is not necessary to follow all of the rules and to understand it completely when using it in your own space. There are some simple tasks you can do to make a more inviting space without really digging into the roots of placement.

Introduction to the Elements

While it is not imperative that you understand the whole meaning behind the elements, a basic understanding can help when starting to add some Feng Sui to your space. The five elements are: wood, water, fire, metal, and earth. There are charts all over the internet to find what element falls in-line with your birthdate, and this will help determine what colors and placements you should use. The idea of Feng Shui is natural balance, so you want to get rid of any elements that may harm yours. For example, if you are wood, you would want to avoid fire and metal colors and placements as they are both harmful to wood.

Avoid Stereotypes

While Feng Shui is indeed an ancient Chinese tradition, it does not mean that you need to decorate your home with stereotypical Chinese pieces of work. Oftentimes a home that is properly Feng-Shui’d will hold elements of a clean and simple Asian layout, but there are almost never any giant goldfish ponds, wind chimes, or bamboo shoots in sight. By making your home look like a cheap Chinese restaurant you are often times making the place more negative and less yourself.

Steps to Making Your Place Positive without a Chinese History Lesson

  • Clear your clutter: get rid of things that you do not need in your home. This is one of the most important steps in making your house feel like it is not being burdened by negative weight. It is almost therapeutic to get rid of things you never use, and it is a great excuse to just tidy up.
  • Remove your shoes before entering the house: this is a ritual that symbolizes leaving all of the day’s problems at the door and entering the haven that is your home.
  • Let in fresh air and light: opening up your windows and allowing airflow and natural sunlight will make the space instantly feel lighter and brighter. Air purifiers are also a great idea, as dust particles and any other harmful things in the air are definitely not leading to a positive environment.
  • Get a good night’s sleep: choose the bedroom that is furthest from the loud road noises near your home, also try to avoid watching negative television programs, such as the news (or just TV in general) before heading into dreamland. This may bring negative thoughts into your self-conscious and cause bad dreams. A peaceful night’s sleep leads to a happy, positive individual the next morning!
